The 2008 Summer Workshop on “Multi-Field Coupling Theory and Smart Materials” is Held in Our Univers
From August 5th to 22nd this year, sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China, the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and Chinese Materials Research Society and financed by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China and our university, the 2008 Summer Workshop (namely, the Advanced Workshop and the National Postgraduate Summer School) on “Multi-Field Coupling Theory and Smart Materials” was organized by our university in our Key Laboratory of Low Dimensional Materials and Application Technology of Ministry of Education, Xiangtan University. It is our first time to hold such a national summer workshop.
Prof. Huang Kezhi, a famous Chinese scientist from Tsinghua University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, served as Chairman of the Academic Committee of the summer workshop. Prof. Hiroshi Ishiwara, a renowned scientist from Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan, President of the Physical Society of Japan, Academician of the Royal Society in UK, and Prof. Fang Daining, Scholar funded by the CAS (Charitable Agency Support) Foundation for Outstanding Young Scientists, Changjiang Scholar awarded by the Ministry of Education of the Peoples Republic of China, Deputy Director of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, served as Vice Chairmen of the Academic Committee of the summer workshop. Prof. Zhou Yichun served as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, while Prof. Fang Daining, Meng Qingguo (Section Chief of the National Natural Science Foundation of China) and Prof. Sun Changqing (Lotus scholar) were the Vice Chairmen of the Organizing Committee.
The teaching staff of the workshop is composed by 18 experts in the fields of Solid Mechanics, Materials Physics and Chemistry as well as Microelectronics and Solid State Electronics. Among them 7 are from well-known universities or research institutions in the US, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc., and the other 11 experts are from the mainland China (including 2 academicians and 9 scholars funded by the CAS). In addition, among the 9 scholars funded by the CAS, 4 are Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professors and 2 are university vice presidents.
Present at the opening ceremony of the workshop were experts and leaders such as Academician Huang Kezhi, Prof. Fang Daining, Section Chief Meng Qingguo and Section Chief Liu Xizhen from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Prof. Zhan Shige, President Luo He’an and Vice President Zhou Yichun from our university, and the people in charge of the Graduate School and the relevant departments of our university. At the opening ceremony, President Luo, on behalf of our university, extended a warm welcome to the lecturers, leaders and students who have attended the workshop. Section Chief Meng Qingguo sent his warm congratulations to the opening of the workshop. Then Academician Huang Kezhi, as a representative of the lecturing experts in the workshop, expressed his ardent wishes to the students of the workshop. Finally, Prof. Fang Daining delivered a brilliant speech and wished the workshop a complete success. The opening ceremony was presided over by Vice President Zhou Yichun.
Guided by the tenet of “Strengthening the Foundation, Promoting the Exchange, Broaden the View, Cultivating Young Reserve Talents in Scientific Research and Improving Graduates’ Comprehensive Quality”, the workshop not only provides some core courses but also introduces the recent research development and the latest research achievement in the field based on the subject characteristics in research on Multi-field Coupling Theory and Smart Materials. The workshop aims to cultivate the sense of innovation of young college teachers and postgraduates, to promote inter-university exchange and cooperation, and to improve the overall quality of the young researchers. We planned to enroll 100 official students and 20 auditing students mainly from the postgraduates from the institutions of higher education and young sci-tech personnel from scientific research institutions. In the end, 120 official students and 60 auditing students were allowed in the workshop after our many-sided discussions, since more than 400 people had applied for admission into the workshop. The students enrolled, including 15 young teachers, 72 Ph.D. candidates and 46 postgraduates, etc., are from 52 well-known higher education institutions and 2 scientific research institutions in China and most of them major in Solid Mechanics, Materials Physics and Chemistry as well as Microelectronics and Solid State Electronics. On August 22nd, a simple graduation ceremony was held after the students had finished their courses. The 160 students who had passed the exam received the Certificate of Completion (printed by the Ministry of Education in a unified way) issued by Vice President Zhou Yichun at the graduation ceremony.
The students said in succession that they had taken the most advanced course in the summer workshop in their school life for the following reasons: (a) it is their first time to have lectures given by so many famous experts in a course, which covers multi-disciplined knowledge in mechanics, materials and electronics, etc.; (b) it is their first time to appreciate the teaching styles (step-by-step teaching spiced with humor) of masters such as Huang Yonggang, whose papers can be found in Science and Nature, the first-class periodicals in the world; (c) it is their first time to get acquainted with the frontier of science in a course such as research on the first eye-shaped camera in the world…
