University Landmark--- Three Arch Doors of XTU
The gate of Xiangtan University has three arch doors, which was built in the beginning of 1980s, and it is the symbolic architecture of our university.
Being very grand and modern, the overall design of the three arch doors combines traditional culture with modern flavor, which connotes Chinese Philosopher Laozi’ idea, that is “Tao gave birth to the one, the one give birth to the two, two give birth to three, and three gave birth to ten thousand things.”
If you just look at one single arch door, it looks like the Chinese character “人(people)”, and three doors are three “人” together that form the character “众(many people)”，which means unity is strength. If you look at the three arch doors as a whole, they look like the Chinese character “山(mountain)”, which symbolizes continuous progress to the pick of knowledge. Each arch door just like a key to the knowledge, which means endless study in the course of exploring the unknown field.
Xiangtan University was established in 1958 according to Chairman Mao’s wish, that was, to build a good university in his hometown. In the same year he autographed the name for the university and requested that the university should be operated well. In 50th anniversary of the university, Bronze Statue of Chairman Mao and Mao Zedong Square were built in front of three arch doors to memorize Chairman’s love and care to the people, undertake the responsibility he asked for and inspire the teachers and students to make our university prosperous.
Nowadays, “Xiangda People” enter the three arch doors confidently and after four-year study they get out of the doors passionately to return for the society with courage and perseverance. No matter where they are from and where they are going, one thing that every “Xiangda People” can not erase is the arch door complex.
