Liu Changgeng, Vice President of Xiangtan University, Visited Makerere University of Uganda
To promote the “Cooperation Program on 20+20 China-Africa Universities” and deepen cooperation and exchange between Xiangtan University and Makerere University，from May 7 to 20, Vice President of Xiangtan University Liu Changgeng headed a delegation of six chiefs and professors from International Exchange Center, International Exchange School, Chemical Industry Engineering School and Law School of XTU to Uganda, scoring substantial achievements.
On the morning of May 8, Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zhao Yali met the delegation at the ambassadors residence. Mr. Zhao listened carefully to the basic situation of Xiangtan University and cooperation between Xiangtan University and Makerere University, spoke highly of the development of XTU in recent years, and encouraged more cooperation between the two universities. He pointed out that Makerere University is second to none in Eastern Africa and acclaimed as “cradle of politicians in Eastern Africa”. The cooperation with Makerere University could not only promote common development in discipline construction, personnel cultivation and scientific research, but also give full play to China’s institutions of higher learning in serving national diplomatic strategy. The ambassador stated that Chinese Embassy in Uganda as well as he himself would give full support to the cooperation and exchange between Xiangtan University and Makerere University, encourage both sides to explore an effective way in terms of refining and deepening cooperation, training of professionals in petrochemical industry and environmental engineering, and joint construction of Confucius Institute.
Later, the Delegation came to Makerere University and received warm welcome from the President Venansius Baryanureeba and from Deans and Presidents of ten college-departments. Both sides probed into issues of common interests at the meeting room. President Liu put forward establishment of long-term and stable cooperation mechanism, extensive cooperation in teacher training, student exchange and scientific research, including petrochemical industry, environmental engineering, African law and Chinese language teaching.
The XTU delegation visited College--department of Humanities & Social Sciences, College-department of Natural Sciences, College of Public Health, Agricultural Sciences & Environmental Studies and College of Law, and listened to the cooperation intention of chiefs of college-departments.
This year is the third year and also the last year of the first round of “Cooperation Program on 20+20 China-Africa Universities”. After the projects ended, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China will conduct comprehensive assessment of the implementation of projects in recent three years, and then choose the second round of universities. Xiangtan University attached great importance to the “Cooperation Program on 20+20 China-Africa Universities” ideologically and strategically. XUT conducted academic and scientific cooperative projects with Makerere University named “Sino-Africa Seminar on Investment and Law” ,“Water Quality Management & Pollution Monitoring” and “Faculty Training & Personnel Cultivation of Professionals in Petrochemical Industry” in 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively. Based on the previous cooperation, XTU and Makerere University have strong confidence in being selected in the “Cooperation Program on 20+20 China-Africa Universities” to upgrade exchange and cooperation between both sides.
