XTU Delegation Attends 2018 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in Africa

The 2018 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in Africa was convened in Maputo, Mozambique on May 14 and 15 (local time), to exchange experience of school operation and promote sustainable and innovative development of the Confucius Institutes in Africa. The conference was hosted by the Confucius Institutes Headquarter (Hanban), and undertaken by Eduardo Mondlane University.
Accompanied by Speaker of Mozambique Macamo, Mo Zhanshu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National Peoples Congress (NPC), who was on an official visit in Mozambique attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. More than 300 people including Chinese and foreign presidents and directors from over 60 Confucius Institutes and Confucius classrooms in 41 African countries, as well as representatives of Chinese and African enterprises and institutions made presence in its largest-ever scale.  
Headed by Secretary of the CPC Xiangtan University (XTU) Committee Huang Yunqing, a delegation consisting of heads of the International Exchange Center and Chinese and foreign deans of Confucius Institute at Makerere University, Uganda attended.
Issues brought up at the two-day conference were wide-ranging. Focusing on “promoting friendly cooperation between China and Africa and building a community of common destiny between China and Africa”, heads of Chinese and African universities such as Mondlane University in Mozambique, Chongqing Normal University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nigeria, Tianjin Normal University, Durban University of Technology in South Africa, Beijing Language and Culture University, and Zhejiang Normal University held the President’s Forum. They introduced the experiences and ideas of Chinese teaching in their own universities. In addition, alumni and representatives from Confucius Institutes at some well-known universities in Africa such as Moi University, University of Nairobi, Egerton University of Kenya, and the University of YaoundeⅡof the Republic of Cameroon conducted typical case analysis and shared experience.
On the second day of the conference, focus was on issues such as “innovation and characteristics development of Confucius Institutes”, “improving the quality of school running”, and “strengthening cooperation and experience sharing of Confucius Institutes”, where the participants shared the cases and held group discussions. Huang Yunqing presided over the third panel discussion. The team members actively participated in the discussion and shared their valuable experience in Chinese teaching. They also put forward many practical suggestions on the future development of the Confucius Institutes in Africa, such as designing distinctive projects according to the local conditions, strengthening cooperation with local government and Chinese-funded enterprises, and enhancing collaboration and communication among Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms in various regions of Africa.
After the meeting, Huang conducted in-depth exchanges on the future development of the Confucius Institute at Makerere University, Uganda with Chinese Dean Professor Hong Yonghong and Foreign Dean Professor Oswald. Later, they paid a visit to the (classroom) school running achievement exhibition of the Confucius Institutes in Africa.
