Confucius Institute at Makerere University Honored as“Advanced Confucius Institute”
The 13th Confucius Institute Conference was held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province on December 4 and 5, 2018. Sun Chunlan, State Council vice premier, CPC Central Committee Political Bureau member, and Confucius Institute Headquarters Council chair, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Chen Baosheng, Chinese Education minister and Confucius Institute Headquarters Council vice chair, presided over the ceremony. The Confucius Institute at Makerere University, jointly established by Xiangtan University (XTU) and Makerere University, was honored the “Advanced Confucius Institute” award, the only one of its kind in Hunan Province.
Themed on “Facilitating New Development Through Reform and Innovation, Forging a Brighter Future with Concerted Efforts”, the Conference included 2 themed forums, 8 forums for Chinese and foreign university presidents, and 20 workshops. Over 1500 people from 154 countries and regions attended the conference.
At the workshop, Oswald Kyamulesire Ndoleriire, dean of the Confucius Institute at Makerere University, gave a speech on “How to do a good job in training teachers and volunteers.” At the president forum, Juan Francisco García Marín, president of the University of León, another jointly-established Confucius Institute at the University, gave a lecture entitled “Building a two-way, multi-disciplinary platform for Confucius Institutes.” XTU Vice President Liu Jianping and relevant persons in charge of the XTU International Exchange Center attended the conference and had extensive communication and exchanges with the participants on the construction and development of the Confucius Institute.
At the closing ceremony, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) commended the advanced Confucius Institutes (classrooms) and individuals of this year. The Confucius Institute at Makerere University was awarded the honor of the “Advanced Confucius Institute”.
There are now 548 Confucius Institutes, 1,193 Confucius Classrooms, and 5,665 Chinese teaching sites worldwide. In 2018, there were 25 advanced Confucius Institutes, 5 advanced Confucius Classrooms, and 41 Confucius Institute deans, teachers, and volunteers being awarded.
